The Nepheal girl put her arms around the suspended body, giving her a hug, I think. Trying to convey something of the shock we had all felt on seeing her. Trying to tell her that help had arrived, that she could hope again.

After the quick hug, Danaa attempted to get Zenzara to move. The Tyzaran girl couldn’t. She had no movement in any part of her body. I saw Danaa begin to drag Zenzie towards the gap. It seemed the Tyzaran girl’s body resisted. Something unseen was pinning it in place. I saw Danaa looking under and around the prone girl, trying to identify the problem.

The doors to the laboratory were now closed. Didjal was signing that they could only be breached by force. That was now being applied. I could hear thumping and the unmistakable sounds of pulsers being directed at them from the other side.

I asked it how long they could be kept out, but it shrugged. It couldn’t know what kind of filling had been used inside the doors. I would imagine that all the doors to a facility like this would be safety doors. It seemed foolish to risk all our lives on that conviction, however.

Didjal was now seated at a smaller console which I hadn’t noticed before. It was peering at computer code and nodding to itself. All four of its arms were busy, with twenty-four digits tapping out a furious instruction.

Suddenly, it looked up. I followed its gaze, just for a second.

The suspended chamber was equipped with many windows, some of which were set into the roof of the huge laboratory we were now in. Through these windows it was possible to see the rock ceiling of the vast main cavern, far above even those windows. Now that I looked more closely, I could just make out vents set in that ceiling. There were many of them, and they were set regularly into the rock so far above us.
